ACTIVITY

Did you know that touch can reduce the stress of the person being comforted, and the person giving. They release Oxytocin, the ‘cuddle hormone’ that is linked to happiness and less stress.

Positive physical touch has many similar benefits to our mental health and overall wellbeing as breathing does. It plays a crucial, but often unknown or not understood role in wellbeing via both psychological and physiological ways.

STEPS

1

Stress Reduction. There are many forms of physical touch – holding hands and hugging being the main two. Oxytocin, sometimes called the ‘cuddle’ or ‘bonding’ hormone is released upon touch. This helps to reduce cortisol levels in our body – the stress hormone.

2

Additionally, physical touch causes the body to release endorphins.  These endorphins give us feelings of pleasure and well-being.  As the body’s natural pain relievers and mood boosters, we also generate them via exercise (another reason for being out in the Clear Air!), laughing and injuring ourselves.  We have probably all known that feeling of the endorphin rush after activity.

3

At a more basic level, touch also helps our emotional state, giving a feeling of safety, security, and reassurance. Additionally, our self esteem and sense of bonding are also enhanced.

From a physical point of view, endorphins can also assist in pain relief. So, all in all, human touch is a powerful tool for both mental health, physical health, and happiness.

While 12, 20 second hugs a day is optimal, let us try one now! If you are comfortable, hug someone in your group for 20 seconds.
